Long Description

Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe, 大红袍) is a Wuyi rock tea grown in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province, China. Da Hong Pao has a unique orchid fragrance and a long-lasting sweet aftertaste. Dry Da Hong Pao has a shape like tightly knotted ropes or slightly twisted strips, and is green and brown in color. Despite its humble appearance, Da Hong Pao has a history that has been traced back to the Qing Dynasty, when it has been given the title “King of the Tea”, and is often ranked first within the local tea trade.

How did it get its name? The Imperial Legend

The name "Big Red Robe" comes from a fantastic tale set during the Ming Dynasty. The story goes that a mother of an emperor (or, in some versions, a high-ranking official) fell gravely ill. No remedy could cure her until her son, traveling through the Wuyi Mountains, was given a special tea by a local monk.

Upon drinking it, the mother made a miraculous recovery. In gratitude, the emperor sent a great red robe to be draped over the four original tea bushes as a symbol of imperial honor and to protect them from the cold. The image of these vibrant red robes against the dark green leaves clinging to the cliff face was so striking that the name "Da Hong Pao" was born forever.

Where is it from? The Cliffside Throne.

Da Hong Pao is the undisputed king of Wuyi Rock Oolongs (Yan Cha) from Fujian Province, China. The tea bushes grow on the steep, mineral-rich cliffs of the Wuyi Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The original mother bushes, from which all modern Da Hong Pao is descended, are still alive today, growing on a rock face at Tianxin Rock. They are over 350 years old and are protected as a national treasure. For decades, no tea was harvested from them, and when it was, it was auctioned for astronomical sums. The tea we drink today comes from cuttings of these original bushes, cultivated in the same unique terroir that gives the tea its distinctive "rock rhyme" (yanyun).

What do the tea leaves look like? Stripped and Roasted

After processing, the dry leaves of Da Hong Pao are long, tightly twisted, and strip-like. They have a dark, charcoal-brown color with occasional rusty-red hues—a result of the extensive roasting process. The leaves feel firm and crisp to the touch. While not as showy as a jade-green tea, their appearance promises a powerful transformation in your teapot.
