Long Description

Famed for its mineral-rich depth and floral complexity, Hui Yuan Keng Shui Xian is an elite Wuyi oolong harvested from ancient tea bushes in one of the most prized micro-regions of the Wuyi Mountains. Revered by tea masters for its long finish and deep “yan yun” (rock charm), this tea is a rare expression of heritage, terroir, and time-honored craftsmanship.

How Did It Get Its Name? A Name That Tells a Story

The name "Hui Yuan Keng Shui Xian" is a map in itself:

Hui Yuan Keng (慧苑坑): This is the specific pit, or ravine, where this tea is born. Hui Yuan Keng is one of the most famous and revered "core pits" in the Wuyi Mountains, known for its unique microclimate and mineral-rich soil.

Shui Xian (水仙): This translates to "Narcissus" or "Water Sprite." The name is poetic, suggesting the tea's elegant, floral character. However, a more popular legend says the tea was discovered growing wild next to a temple. A monk found its taste so divine and energizing that he named it "Shui Xian" (Water Immortal), implying it bestowed a longevity and vitality worthy of an immortal.

So, together, the name means "Water Immortal Tea from the Hui Yuan Ravine." It’s a promise of a specific, prestigious origin and a celestial character.

Origin & History: A Tea Steeped in Time

Shui Xian is one of the oldest tea varieties in the Wuyi Rock Tea (Yan Cha) family, with a recorded history dating back to the Qing Dynasty (around the 17th century). It was discovered in the Wuyi Mountain region of Fujian Province, China—the holy land for Oolong teas.

The discovery of the specific qualities of Hui Yuan Keng was a matter of terroir. The tea farmers of Wuyi, over centuries, realized that the teas grown in the narrow, mist-shrouded pits like Hui Yuan Keng developed a character far superior to those on the open slopes. The rocky terrain, the dappled sunlight, and the constant mineral seepage from the cliffs gave the tea a distinctive "rock bone" or Yan Yun (岩韵)—the mineral, lingering aftertaste that is the hallmark of the finest Wuyi Oolongs.

The Leaves: A Visual Tale

Before brewing, the dry leaves themselves tell a story:

They are dark, twisted, and robust, with a dull charcoal-brown color—a result of the extensive roasting process.

Upon closer inspection, you might see a faint, bluish-green tint ("frog-belly green") peeking through, a sign of high-quality processing.

The leaves feel thick and substantial, hinting at the rich, layered liquor they are about to release.
